The Vision of the Trust builds on images of growth and development which are not only prevalent in nature around us, but also rooted in the Scriptures. They reveal a Creator God, who’s heart is that we should be inspired, developing and flourishing beings. The disciples called Jesus Rabbi or Rabboni: Teacher. “Teach us to pray” they ask him on a famous occasion. Wisdom and knowledge are themes running throughout the Bible. Teaching and learning help us fulfil the potential God has planted within each of us.

Some of the passages that engage us, and develop these topics, include:

Genesis 1:1, 27, 31

In the beginning God created

… So God created humankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them

…God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good.

Galatians 5: 22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Jeremiah 17: 7-8

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord.
For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters,
Which spreads out its roots by the river,
And will not fear when heat comes;
But its leaf will be green
And will not be anxious in the year of drought,
Nor will cease from yielding fruit.”

Psalm 92:12,13

The righteous flourish like the palm tree, and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in the house of the Lord; they flourish in the courts of our God.

Revelation 22: 2

In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

Mark 12: 30-31

30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[a] 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

John 1:38,

John 20:16

When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, ‘What are you looking for?’ They said to him, ‘Rabbi’ (which translated means Teacher)…

Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ She turned and said to him in Hebrew, ‘Rabbouni!’ (which means Teacher).

Psalm 86:11

Teach me your way, O Lordthat I may walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart to revere your name.

Proverbs 9:9

Give instruction to the wise, and they will become wiser still; teach the righteous and they will gain in learning.

Luke 11:1-4

Jesus was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.’ He said to them, ‘When you pray, say:

Father, hallowed be your name.
    Your kingdom come.

Give us each day our daily bread.
    And forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us.
And do not bring us to the time of trial.’

Isaiah 55: 12

“For you shall go out with joy, and be led out with peace;
The mountains and the hills shall break forth into singing before you,
And all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.”
