Toby Cooper, School Business Manager
St Matthew's School
I started working in education in 2006, gaining valuable experience across a range of business support functions before taking on the role of School Business Manager in 2016. I have worked in the independent sector, a large multi-academy trust, and, prior to St Matthew’s conversion in February 2018, within the local authority.
The business support that I, and St Matthew’s, receive from the Trust is more than just professional advice or the guidance you might ordinarily expect as part of a service-level agreement. Why? Because the Trust truly knows its schools. I can pick up the phone or send an email at any time and speak with someone who not only understands each school within the Trust but also appreciates its history and unique context. This means the support and advice are always tailored, thoughtful, and grounded in understanding.
The support provided goes beyond ensuring statutory compliance; when needed, it also helps deliver processes or resolve complex issues.
One of the Trust’s greatest strengths is the way it creates opportunities for leaders to develop and grow. Personally, I have found that taking on wider Trust responsibilities, particularly through group projects, has been both rewarding and invaluable for my own professional development and future career aspirations. My experience is that pathways are not blocked here, they are actively supported.
