Mark Burnett

Chief Operating Officer

From educational standards to financial performance and compliance, Mark is responsible for all aspects of the Trust’s day-to-day running.

Previously he was the Chief Operating Officer for one of the largest and most successful Multi-Academy Trusts (MAT) in England, which he helped grow from one school to over 40.

Mark took up post here at the SDBE Multi-Academy Trust in 2017 where his job was to set up the Trust from scratch and ensure it was ready to welcome and support schools on their unique journey.

Mark is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute, a Fellow of the Institute of Business Leadership and a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership & Management.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide strategic leadership to ensure educational and operational excellence across Trust
  • Translate the Trust’s vision into agreed objectives and operational plans
  • Establish robust systems of monitoring, self-evaluation and quality assurance that drive Trust policies and priorities
  • Ensure that any concerns are quickly identified and, where necessary, appropriate and swift intervention strategies are implemented
  • Keep abreast of educational developments and anticipate the consequences of future trends and initiatives

Leading and managing staff 

  • Plan, implement and review an organisational structure that reflects the needs of the Trust as it grows that enables the management systems, structures and processes to work effectively
  • Support the development of distributed leadership across the Trust and ensure clear delegation of tasks and devolution of responsibilities
  • Recruit, retain and deploy staff appropriately and manage their workload to achieve the vision and goals for the Trust
  • Develop and maintain a culture of high expectation for self and for others, celebrate achievements and take appropriate action when performance is unsatisfactory 

Resources, accountability and communication

  • Manage and deploy the Trust’s resources effectively and efficiently to achieve its objectives, ensuring compliance with all regulatory and contractual requirements
  • Have strategic oversight of the Trust finances
  • Develop and present a coherent, understandable and accurate account of the Trust’s performance 
  • Ensure clear lines of accountability for all Trust academies through effective schemes of delegation and good governance
  • To line manage Trust staff 
  • To represent the Trust on consultative and statutory groups and committees as required
