Our People Stories

In today’s educational landscape, being part of a MAT offers a unique environment that fosters growth, innovation, and a shared commitment to excellence. As a senior leader, I have seen first-hand how the MAT has created a culture that prioritises the success of both students and staff. Joining the MAT in 2021 was a pivotal step in my career. Although I joined with prior leadership experience, I quickly realised that joining this trust was different from anything I had experienced before. From the very start, I felt genuinely valued and recognised for my skills and potential, which was both motivating and empowering.
Within my first few months, the Trust presented me with opportunities that went far beyond my expectations. I was given the chance to work across different schools within the trust, allowing me to support them but also broaden my perspective and understand the unique strengths and challenges of each community the schools served.
Through mentoring staff at other provisions and collaborating with leaders, I was also able to bring new ideas to the table and truly innovate in ways that were both impactful and fulfilling. This experience has enabled me to grow as a leader, contribute to our collective mission on a larger scale, and make a meaningful difference for our pupils and staff across the MAT, which has been fulfilling both personally and professionally.
The MAT promotes a culture that empowers you to be part of something larger than a single school. I have connected with a community of professionals working toward a common vision, where shared values, collaboration, and support guides our collective mission to deliver the best possible education for every pupil.
Being part of a MAT has provided me with several distinct advantages. Working within the MAT meant joining a network group of senior leaders who shared experiences, challenges, and goals. Being part of this supportive network, which meets regularly, has allowed me to be transparent with my challenges, learn from others, share best practices, draw on a wide pool of expertise and ask for support without feeling vulnerable. This collective approach to problem-solving and innovation has on many occasions permitted me to leverage our combined strengths for the benefit of the school.
Having worked as a Senior Leader in many schools, the MAT offers a much broader range of resources and support than what would be ordinarily available in-house. From HR and finance to curriculum, SEND and compliance, the MAT has provided expertise that has freed me from day-to-day administrative tasks or seeking external costly support, allowing me to focus on educational leadership and strategic initiatives.
At all levels, the MAT provides opportunities for staff to develop and excel. From TA roles to senior leadership positions, staff members are encouraged to pursue their professional goals and explore new avenues for growth. The MAT’s comprehensive approach, which I have been able to access, includes Professional Development Network meetings and Leadership Pathways.
One of the most rewarding aspects of being in a MAT is the access to mentorship and guidance from experienced senior leaders. The challenges of leadership can at times feel overwhelming, but being part of a MAT has provided me with a strong support system. I have gained valuable perspectives, advice, and encouragement. This has been instrumental in developing my ability to stay grounded and focused in challenging times. This mentorship has also been invaluable to my personal growth, teaching me the importance of self-awareness, adaptability, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
A part of the MAT which stands out for me is the MAT’s dedication to staff well-being. Recognising that a supported, well-cared-for staff is key to a successful school, the MAT provides resources and initiatives that prioritise mental and physical health. This includes the Employee Assistance Programme, a programme for all staff who need help, support or advice in absolute confidence. The MAT also encourages staff to maintain a healthy work-life balance and offers flexible working arrangements.
This commitment to well-being fosters a positive working environment where I can flourish. Having taken a period of leave to have an operation, the MAT made sure I knew that they were supportive of my recovery, that I was valued, and that they were both praying and thinking of me. Prioritising staff well-being in this way enables me and the other staff to always bring our best selves to our roles and fosters both commitment and loyalty.
The combination of professional and personal development opportunities within the MAT has allowed me to go from strength to strength as a senior leader and head of school. Every experience, challenge, and success has contributed to my growth, reinforcing my commitment to making a positive impact.
I can only define my experience within the MAT as transformative. The opportunities provided by Trust Leaders have enabled me to develop and drive meaningful change. Their commitment to my growth and excellence, alongside the emphasis on accountability and reflection, has also encouraged me to assess my strengths, identify areas for growth, and set personal goals. This process of reflection has been key to my personal development, enabling me to learn from my experiences, adjust my approach, and embrace challenges with a growth mindset. This culture has not only made me a better leader, it has also enriched me as an individual and acts as a foundation for lasting success. It is fundamental to the way I make a difference to those I serve.
